St Hilda of Whitby

Hilda was a seventh century abbess at several monasteries.  Renowned for her wisdom, kings came to her for advice.

We know about her from the works of Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English People (731).  She was regarded as an important figure in the conversion of the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity.
